Night of Insomniac Love, by Federico Garcia Lorca

Night of Insomniac Love

Night came to us full as the moon.
I took to crying as you laughed,
your carelessness a god, my sorrow
an enchained moment and a dove.

Night sank us both. Crystal of pain,
you cried the depths of distant lands,
my grief a crowd of agonies
around your heart, weak and made of sand.

Dawn united us in bed, our mouths
pressed over the frozen torrent
of endless blood that flows and flows.

And the sun came in through a shut balcony
and life’s coral spread its branches
over my heart, dead and shrouded then.

— Federico Garcia Lorca, my (loose) translation.

This is a sonnet, with 11-syllable lines, two quatrains rhymed abba, and two tercets rhymed cdc dcd.

Noche de Amor Insomne

Noche arriba los dos con luna llena,
yo me puse a llorar y tú reías.
